My brother said yes to a friend that he'll come to Japan with him next year in May and Iwould like him to go to experience travel a little bit. So far, he has saved 0$ while his friend has saved 5000$. So I took the initiative to make him save now. I counted his change and he has 60$ in his little toy bank. He wants me to save his money in another way because that money in the toy bank is to buy something expensive. I was asking myself how can my brother save for his Japan trip if he is putting all 50 cents a day for something expensive like concert tickets, games, etc and he is using his weekly allowance to go out and buy stuff.
I told him that I'm willing to help him with saving but he needs to priorize one thing and that is Japan. He replied back and he said that he might be going to Hong Kong to visit his cousins... I think I'm helping him save his money so he can spend it later on more useless stuff... Now I just wonder, is it worth helping him save or it's better to let him learn ? He isn't willing to work harder though... He thinks I can help him save 3000$ in no time. ._______."
Is it worth it?

its the same with my boyfriend, we want to buy a house together and while i'm socking away money for half of my deposit and trying to pay off my car loan, he goes and books a 3 week trip to america and then spnds $4000 on a car (why? because he wants it), when he could have easily used my second car that i own.
Some things people do are frustrating, especially when you can see where they are going wrong and where their priorities are a bit screwed up. I guess its one of those times where you might have to sit back and let them learn - help as much as you can and give good saving tips, and try to constantly remind them of the bigger picture (do you really want to spend $50 on that? or would you rather miss out, save it, and be able to go to japan?). it also helps, although it probably sounds a bit like nagging, to remind them of the money they have ALREADY spent, that they could have saved, cause sometimes it will help them with their impulse purchases later on. (eg. you bought a cd that you havent listened to.why? you caould have saved it!)
anyway. i probably didnt help, but i hope i did in some way!
